BSM 2026
We participated in the Belgian Society for Microbiology (BSM) Symposium in Brussels! The meeting encompassed diverse fields of the microbial world, including insights into Archaea by Sonja-Verena Albers, and marvelous bacterial chemotaxis presented by Isabel Roditi.
The program also included many poster presentations showcasing the work of future Belgian scientists.
We are already looking forward to BSM 2027!
Our lab is growing!
Max, Yoav, Jana, and Emre joined around September and got started on high-throughput mass spectrometry and enzyme characterization projects. Alongside the science, we also enjoy time together outside the lab, and recently celebrated the end of the year with a visit to the Brussels Christmas market, a festive way to wrap up the year as a team.
Three new PIs land Odysseus grants
Our Odysseus project explores carbon capture through enzymatic diversification. This project examines how phytoplankton enzymes might inadvertently transform storage polysaccharides into molecules that resist microbial degradation—key contributors to the ocean's stable carbon pool
Interview with Sammy Pontrelli as he starts his position at VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology
We will be at Genomic Science 2024
On Nov 21 2024, Sammy Pontrelli will be keynote speaker at the Genomic Science 2024 Academic Meeting at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
We're looking for a postdoc in microbiology/microbial metabolomics
Our lab will study how microbes capture carbon dioxide and sequester it in the ocean. You will get to develop and apply a new type of enzyme-couple metabolomics method to explore microbial metabolism and interactions between marine microbes and their environment.
Pontrelli lab opening in Leuven in Jan 2025
Samuel Pontrelli will join VIB-KU Leuven as a professor starting 2025. The Pontrelli lab will study how marine microbes capture CO2 and sequester it in ancient ocean molecules, taking an approach that combines microbiology, high-throughput metabolomics and biochemistry.
Sammy Pontrelli: "I’m looking forward to working with and learning from my new colleagues at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology and the Biology Department at KU Leuven."
